Nuogong (Lord Nuo)
Nuomu (Mother Nuo)

Miao legends of western Hunan have it that Lord Nuo and Mother Nuo are siblings who survived a great flood, and their descendants, born from their union, eventually became the Miao peoples. After the autumn harvest, the “Repaying a Nuo Vow” ceremony is performed. Sacrificial offerings are made to Lord Nuo and Mother Nuo, the principal deities of the ceremony, to invoke blessings for an abundant harvest in the coming year, the birth of a son to continue the family line, and prosperity overall.

Pictured here is a Nuo hall prepared for the “Repaying a Nuo Vow” set of rituals. Positioned on the “table of the gods” from left to right are Lord Nuo and Mother Nuo along with the tablecloth and offerings, such as incense and rice, in front. On the back wall is a hanging scroll concerning the Three Pures and other Daoist deities.
