Gospel of John
This edition from the Christian Bible employs a phonetic-like script to transcribe the language of the Hei (Black) Miao subgroup. In the 1920s, Maurice H. Hutton (n.d.), a missionary attached to the China Inland Mission, attempted to use this script to translate the Bible. Early IHP Research Fellow Ruey Yih-fu maintains that, compared to romanization or new phonetic symbols, “Bopomofo” (or Zhuyin Fuhao) is the easiest tool for training minority groups to write their language. Additionally, it supports the spread of Mandarin.
