Marble Sculpture of a Standing Owl
This standing owl is one of the finest marble pieces found at Anyang. The owl is vividly depicted with a pointed beak, round eyes, and thick arched brows, as well as being covered with various motifs, including scales, beasts, dragons, and geometric shapes. On its back a long groove runs from head to tail, suggesting that it may have been designed for use as architectural ornamentation. The owl is often represented in Shang art, such as those in bronzes and jades. The motifs on this piece are similar to those found on its bronze counterparts.
