Compilation of Studies on the Four Books

Compilation of Studies on the Four Books largely aims to verify the historical figures, institutions, and objects found in the Four Books. Author Chen Hongmou indicated that the studies of the Four Books generally “lack records on institutions and figures”; moreover, when studying the contents of the Four Books, he had not explored the history of classics and thus “studied and wrote without much basis and a feeling of cloudiness.” Therefore, this work when explaining the contents and chapters of the Four Books, not only expounds each phrase or concept, but also includes maps corresponding to each dynasty as well as illustrations noting the location of Ming Hall and depicting ritual objects, thereby offering the reader an intuitive visual to better apprehend related contents.
